Topics and activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Solfege - the use of a movable set of syllables (Do, Re, Mi) to develop a sense of relative pitch
  • Count-singing - using beat numbers and subdivisions to count out rhythms on the fly
  • Basic conducting, for the purpose of feeling the relationship between rhythm and meter
  • Intervals, interval inversion, compound intervals, classifying from most consonant to most dissonant
  • Tertian harmony, chord quality and function, circle of 5ths, secondary dominants, tonicization, closely related keys
  • Understanding and interpreting key signatures and time signatures at a glance
  • Dictation - the practice of writing down the music you hear
  • Helpful drills and exercises for sharpening musicianship skills
  • Group activities and games

You should strongly consider this course if you:

  • want pointers and tools for developing rock-solid musicianship as a singer or instrumentalist
  • are tired of relying on someone else to teach you the music that's on the page in front of you
  • are excited to be able to sing new music the first time you see it, like reading aloud from a newspaper
  • want to give yourself an advantage in auditions, recitals, concerts, and singing competitions
  • are in a position of musical leadership or prominence, such as a church choir director, organist, or choir member, or in a singing role for a musical theater production
  • have always wanted to learn how to write down the music that you hear in your head
  • prefer multimedia learning environments that are interactive, hands-on, challenging, and yet still fun and entertaining
  • like coffee and donuts
